Dead and dying pine removal in Prescott
When a pine in Prescott turns from green to yellow to rusty red over a few weeks, bark beetles are the usual cause, and drought is usually what let them in. Healthy ponderosa and pinyon pines push attacking beetles out with resin. After a dry winter and a late monsoon, they can't. Prescott National Forest and University of Arizona extension staff name Arizona fivespined ips and pine engravers as the most common attackers around Prescott.
A dead pine doesn't stay a simple job for long. Call (928) 766-TREE and we'll line up a licensed local crew to take it down and deal with the wood properly, so the beetles inside don't move on to the pines next door.

How to tell if your pine has bark beetles
The first signs are small. Look for pitch tubes on the trunk, blobs of sap about the size of a popcorn kernel; reddish boring dust in bark crevices and around the base; and tiny round exit holes. Ips beetles often start high, so the crown may fade from the top down. The needles go from green to a dull yellow-green, then straw, then red.
By the time the whole crown is red, the beetles have usually left for the next tree, which is why the trees around a dead pine matter as much as the dead one. A healthy-looking neighbor with fresh pitch tubes may still be saved with water, or may need to come out before a new brood emerges. Some pines survive a small early attack by pushing it out with sap; the brown and red ones can't.
Why waiting makes a dead pine more expensive
A pine killed this summer still has fairly sound wood, and a climber can tie in and work it like a live tree. A pine that has stood dead through a winter and a monsoon is a different job. The wood dries and checks, the branches turn brittle, and the roots start to rot. A climber may not be able to trust the tree at all, which means a bucket truck or crane, and that costs more.
Dead pines near homes are also a fire risk. Dry needles and twigs catch easily, and a dead tree that goes over in a storm brings its full weight down at once. If a pine near your house or driveway has gone red, plan to have it out within a few months, not a few years.
What to do with the wood, and the pines that are left
Freshly infested pine can carry the next generation of beetles. Extension guidance in Yavapai County is to keep that wood away from living pines: chip it, haul it to the transfer station, or split it, stack it in full sun and seal it under clear plastic for several weeks so the heat kills the brood. Don't stack it as firewood against a healthy ponderosa.
For the surviving pines, the best defense is water. During a dry spring or fall, a slow, deep soak around the dripline once or twice a month makes a real difference to a tree's ability to make resin. Thinning crowded stands helps too, because trees that aren't fighting for water fight beetles better. Preventive sprays exist for high-value trees and are applied by licensed pest control applicators; ask about them if a prized pine stands next to an infested one.

Questions
Questions about dead pine removal
Can a pine with bark beetles be saved?
Sometimes, if the attack is caught early and the tree is still mostly green. Deep watering and removing infested neighbors can help a lightly attacked tree. Once the whole crown has turned yellow or red, it can't recover.
Do I have to remove a dead pine tree?
Usually no rule forces you to, but a dead pine near a house, road or neighbor's property is a liability and a fire hazard. Out in the woods, away from anything it could hit, a dead snag can be left standing for wildlife.
Why are junipers dying around Prescott too?
In 2025, University of Arizona extension staff examined dying junipers north of Prescott and pointed to drought as the main cause, with few insects involved. Drought-stressed junipers can attract bark beetles later, so dead ones near homes should still come out.
Can I burn beetle-killed wood in my fireplace?
Yes, once it's dry, and burning it over the winter is one way to get rid of infested wood. Until then, keep it away from living pines, ideally sealed under clear plastic in the sun.
